Youth Baton Relay Enters Pune City
Pune, October 7th, 2008: Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008’s Youth Baton Relay entered Pune today after spending a day in Pimpri Chinchwad. The Youth Baton Relay entered the city through Harris Bridge in Bopodi where it was welcomed by Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, MP and Chairman, OC, CYG Pune 2008 and CWG Delhi 2010, Mrs. Rajlaxmi Bhosale, Hon’ble Mayor of Pune and International Badminton Champion Trupti Murgunde, who were also the first Baton bearers in Pune. Along with Jigrr, the official mascot for CYG Pune 2008, thousands of school and college students and enthusiastic citizens were present to welcome the Baton in the host city. The Baton has reached Pune after having traveled through 9 states, 199 cities, towns and villages covering a distance of over 8500 kilometers. Over 6,000 sportspersons carried the Baton and nearly 7,000 Volunteers helped the Baton’s journey.

People came on to the streets in thousands to cheer the Youth Baton Relay and the air was filled with the sound of drum beats and colours of the Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008. The Baton traveled from Bopodi to Khadki and made its way to Holkar Bridge on Bicycles. The Baton was received at the banks of Mula - Mutha river by Brig. Sanjeev Talwar - Commandant BEG & Centre, where it started its journey by water and made its way to COEP Boat Club accompanied by 71 Boats representing each participating Commonwealth nation. International Rower Smita Shirole Yadav carried the Baton on one of the boats.

The Youth Baton Relay visited Yerwada, B.E.G, Vishrant Wadi, Nagpur Chawl, Airport road, Chandan Nagar, Mundhwa, Hadapsar, Fatima Nagar, Shinde Chatri, Koregaon Park, Wadia College chowk, Pune Station and halted at Shaniwar Wada.
