150 Days To Go" countdown for CYG Pune 2008 celebrated with a colourful event
15th May 2008: To commemorate the “150 days to go” for Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008, the Organizing Committee of CYG Pune 2008 organized an artistic mélange on canvas to mark this day.

Sarasbaug woke up to the sounds of the sanai to welcome prominent city artists and people from various walks of life, who assembled to commemorate the day by expressing their thoughts with a colour riot on a 150 x 6 feet canvas in support of the Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in October.

Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, Chairman, CYG Pune 2008 inaugurated the event. Artists expressed their visions on CYG by painting their interpretations of the theme inspired by the Spirit of the Games. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kalmadi said “I am very happy that the Youth games fever has caught on and Puneites have come forward to make this day a success, as is evident from the large crowd that have turned up at 7.00 a.m.“

The huge turn out at the event comprised of prominent city personalities, sportsmen from the city and Team Pune Volunteers. The art fraternity represented by renowned artists like Murlidhar Nagare, Murali Lahoti, Mukund Kelkar, Shobha Patki, Dileep Patil, Raosaheb Gaurav, Dilip Kadam, and Prakash Joshi were pleased at this unique approach of bringing so many artists together to paint at a public platform on one huge canvas. Nine disciplines of the games, “Go Green“ , medals and divine power in the form of Lord Ganesh were depicted on the canvas. 81 years old art veteran Mr. D. S Khatavkar sir who highlighted net sports through his painting said “This event is one of its kind to happen in Pune for the very first time.” Artist Bharti and Gauri used this occasion to highlight “Save The Tiger” movement. Ms. Arti Kirloskar drew inspiration from Yoga in her painting. Mr. Shirish Deshmukh portrayed force and speed in his depiction of a female high jumper. The canvas will be later displayed at the Games Village at Balewadi during the Games.
